Modeling a Bottle

In today’s video we draw a blow-molded style plastic bottle. We use a revolve to create the body of the bottle and shell it hollow. A thread is then swept along a helical path and finished with attractive filleting. A few other tricks and tips are explored along the way.

    Dear Tim,

Once again I’ve enjoyed this fine tutorial. I was wondering: in some bottlecaps you see a thread broken down in smaller “lanes”. What is the best way to construct such a thing?

Good luck on your site, outstanding quality of tutorials! I’ve bookmarked it.

I am fairly new at Solidworks, and I was just wondering, how to put threads onto a stud. I would appreciate any help on this in a step by step method.

    Thanks

    Bram,
I believe I know what you are describing. Could modeling a small segment of tread with lead-in and out (perhaps just an 1/8th of a revolution) and then replicating this bump around the neck with a curve driven pattern along a helix produce the effect you are looking for?

    Con,
In the near future I will be producing a video on Cosmetic Threads that I think will be of interest to you. Stay tuned.

    Hi,
Can you tell me how to make a tread around a globoidal shape(hourglass shape)? Thanks,

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR INSTRUCTION! Easy to understand and follow…Thanks a million. I do have a question: I am trying to learn surfacing…doing projects like Ultra Downy & Tide bottles…Where the varying surfaces change. Do you have any examples or would you please be able to give me some help?
    Thanks again,

Really impressive tutorials, thanks. As a software engineer getting into mechanical design as a hobby, I especially appreciate your focus on “design best practice,” e.g. your discussion of the different ways to keep the threads from intruding into the inside of the bottle. Keep up the great work!

    Hey,
This tutorial is exactly what I was looking for to model some threaded rod. I have a question though, when I try to make the sweep, there is no ghost preview and the operation “cannot be completed.”

I checked the profile with a revolve and that worked just fine. I tried remaking the helix both inside the rod and outside but it just didn’t work. Do you know what might help?

    Thanks so much!
    -Natty

    Thanks

This is a fantastic tutorial, the helix options to get the varying dia is awesome, Have watched 3 of your vids now and each one is so well presented.

Bookmarked and will return again and again !!

    Thank you.

Realy good job keep it up, helped out nicely. If you can you should go through the living hinge command

    EXCELLENT TUTORIAL.
GOT MYSELF STUCK FOR A WHILE WHEN I MOVED THE THREAD SKETCH TO THE END OF THE HELIX INSTEAD OF ALONG IT’S LINE.

u cheated with the dome in the bottom,i was expecting a traditional PET bottom, the reason why i was searching for the tutorial in the first place, any hint on how i do that?
